Joseph Hirshhorn was an avid fan of modern art and began collecting art pieces as soon as he began making money. In total, he gave 12,000 pieces of art to what has become the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden.
Docent Mary Ellen Michel will take us on a panorama view of 20th and 21st century sculpture pieces from the Hirshhorn’s collection, including pieces donated by Hirshhorn, the collector, as well as pieces purchased later by the Museum.
This presentation will review several sculptors, from Auguste Rodin, who fashioned what we think of as “modern” sculpture, to Abigail DeVille, who uses found objects to convey feelings about society. From this review, we will be able to see the influences artists had on each other and the inspirations they drew from the times in which they lived.
