We are surrounded by fiber in our daily lives, but may not have thought of it as an art medium. But, increasingly in the last 100 years, fiber work has become a more accepted art tool. The artists in this autumn’s upcoming exhibition at the Smithsonian American Art Museum (SAAM) have mastered the expressive use of fiber and created an alternative history of American art through its use.
Given their female vantage points and, in many cases, honing intergenerational skills, women artists have been able to transform humble threads into resonant and intricate art pieces, revolutionizing the concept of art itself. And the artworks to be shown are as diverse as the women who made them, such as Emma Amos, Barbara Chase-Riboud, Claire Zeisler, Faith Ringgold and Kay Sekimachi.
