Hokusai and the Art of Japan

With Richard Lum, Docent with the Smithsonian National Museum of Asian Art

The Great Wave Off Kanagawa – everyone knows this woodblock print. It was even painted as a mural on the side of a house in DC’s Georgetown. Although the Freer Gallery does not include Hokusai’s woodblock prints, it has the world’s foremost collection of Hokusai’s paintings, including Breaking Waves, another view of ocean crashing onto land.

Hokusai was a prolific artist, creating thousands of works throughout a long life – some say 90+ years. Like the 36 Views, the Gallery’s Hokusai exhibition provides a panoramic view of the artist’s creations and artistic personality. Docent Richard Lum, who guided us through October’s discussion of the Gallery’s Peacock Room and James McNeill Whistler’s temperament, will lead us into the art world of Hokusai and his homeland, which was still living with restricted access to the rest of the world.
