NBV is excited to offer the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of American Sign Language (ASL).  Learning ASL offers numerous benefits, from improved cognitive function and communication skills to increased cultural awareness and career opportunities. It's a valuable skill for connecting with the Deaf community, strengthening family bonds, and broadening one's perspective.

The instructor, Meredith Seed, has been teaching ASL for 20 years.  A practicing artist, she has a BA degree in American Sign Language and Music Education.

Note that the class will meet on Saturday afternoons for eight (8) weeks, starting September 5 and going until October 31st, but with a break on September 12th for Rosh Hashana. This  ASL class is designed for seniors.  

This "Introduction to Basic American Sign Language" class will provide senior students with the ABCs of sign language with basic numbers and words plus a song or two, e.g., "Bingo" and "Amazing Grace."   By the end of the class, students will be able to spell out simple words in ASL as well as present words in simple sentence form.

The class will also incorporate ASL games and group activities to help cement learning. Copies of the basic primer will be given to each student to enable them to continue practicing at home.  

Class size is limited to 20 students.  To enable in-class learning and practice, students will be seated in a wide semi-circle to foster in-class learning and practice.  Each class will review learnings from previous classes to enhance retention and application of the material.  

Although classes will be weekly (except for September 12th), please note that the hour-long class start times might vary due to restrictions on the availability of the classroom space.  All meeting times start at 2 pm except on Sept. 19th and 26th and Oct. 17th when the class will start at 12 pm.

A basic course fee of $40 per student will be charged to cover all course materials costs.
