Kathleen Reedy, National Science Foundation Researcher
It is one thing to view the Antarctic from a plane or a ship, but an entirely different experience to be dropped off on the continent’s ice shelf for a lengthy stay. The first to attempt to traverse the continent, Sir Ernest Shackleton and his Endurance crew, braved an agonizing trip only to be rebuffed by the sea, ice, and weather. In contrast, commercial firms now advertise pleasure trips to the continent.
Kathleen Reedy will talk about early attempts to explore the continent, its geography and governance, as well as what wildlife and conditions one would encounter there. Kathleen made seven trips there, spending a total of ten months on her research of human adaptation to cold climate, working at America’s McMurdo and South Pole research stations.
