Underdogs and Antiheroes from the Moskowitz Collection of Japanese Ukiyoe Prints

This presentation introduces us to the underbelly of Japanese society in the Edo period of the 1800s, a world seldom seen outside of Japan, but one that has fascinated everyday Japanese citizens and artists even to today. The prints are from the Pearl and Seymour Moskowitz Collection (more than 660 prints) focusing on societal underdogs and antiheroes as well as related subjects, e.g., ghosts, tattooed firemen, and sumo wrestlers. The Japanese public was fascinated by larger-than-life misfits, oddities and the supernatural. So, as the Smithsonian’s own exhibit description says, “Expect the unexpected!”
