Along with Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse, Marcel Duchamp is considered one of the most important and influential artists of the 20th century. In fact, in poll after poll of artists, he emerges as *the* most important Western artist of all time. And yet, why is it that his work is not as widely known as one would expect?
In this overview of Marcel Duchamp’s career as artist, writer, curator, and world-class chess master, we will look at how Duchamp not only revolutionized the way we look at art, but the very definition of “art” itself.
Enigmatic, playful, and intellectually challenging, Duchamp’s work provided a wellspring of inspiration for a host of artists, including most notably Jasper Johns, Robert Rauchenberg, and Andy Warhol. From Dada, to Surrealism, to Cubism, to Pop, to Conceptualism, Duchamp holds a special place as a pioneer.
This interactive conversation will focus on works by Duchamp currently on view at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden and at the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
